Fieldbuses in industrial Environments

PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP

Thanks to their modular design, IFTA measurement systems can be flexibly integrated into existing processes and networks. Data exchange between the IFTA measurement system and the plant control system is important for the smooth operation of the plant. If the communication standards PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus RTU oder Modbus TCP are used here, the following modules are suitable for sending and receiving data.

What is PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus RTU und Modbus TCP and what is the difference?

These are communication standards for the safe automation of plants. PROFIBUS is an established communication standard and, like PROFINET, is developed by the user organization PI.
PROFINET is a further development of PROFIBUS based on industrial Ethernet. PROFINET offers advantages such as more bus participants, higher transmission speed as well as larger data packages.
PROFIBUS and PROFINET are frequently used in Siemens automation systems, as these protocols are natively supported there and are the most widely used.

Modbus RTU is an RS-485-based protocol.
Modbus TCP is a widely used Ethernet-based protocol, known for its ease of implementation, high compatibility, and suitability for applications with moderate data rates.

Highlights

  • Communication module for fast and secure data exchange with a PROFIBUS master
  • Based on the PROFIBUS fieldbus protocol: PROFIBUS is a standardized, open, digital communication system for any applications in manufacturing and process automation
  • Two redundant PROFIBUS slaves for maximum reliability (also available with a single bus interface)
  • DP-V0 slave
  • Transfer of up to 244 bytes of I/O data
  • Via the SignalMiner software you can freely define which signals are to be sent and received. On the one hand, you can send e.g. warning and alarm messages but also amplitudes. On the other hand, you can receive operating data as well as limit values and machine states

Advantages of the PROFIBUS Technology

  • PROFIBUS is one of the most universal solutions in the field of process automation
  • PROFInet, PROFIsafe PROFIdrive and many other variants can be intuitively connected via corresponding gateways, so you are well-equipped for the most diverse requirements
  • Further information about PROFIBUS you will find on the PI User Organisation's website
